The Systems Theory in Management
Introduction
According to Kwo-Shing (2003), a system is an entity that is made up of many
interrelating and interacting elements. A system has got its inputs which usually undergo a
transformation which refines them into a desirable output. He elaborates that a system can either
be open or closed. In a closed system, the environment does not have an effect on the
relationships in the subsets of the system, while in an open system the elements of the entity are
affected by the environment. Going by that, Kwo-Shing (2003) defines a system theory of
management as a technique used in analysing the relationships and interrelationships existing
between and among the elements of a system. It focuses on phenomena as a whole, while at the
same time recognising the role of the single elements contributing to the whole.
Most businesses are open systems. In regard to this, Hayashi (2002) explains that open
systems usually receive the input, process it and then give the finished products to the
environment. For instance, a mining industry depends on the raw materials derived from the
