Windshield Survey
Conducting a community survey/assessment aids in the planning, implementation, and
evaluation of programs. An assessment can reveal what the community lacks, areas in which
improvement will be beneficial for the population's health. A windshield survey is an informal
method used by community health nurses to obtain basic foundational knowledge about a given
community. It provides a subjective view of a communal area's various physical characteristics,
as observed while driving or walking through a neighborhood.
Public health nurses play a significant role in ensuring the wellness of the community.
They integrate the community knowledge and involvement of the entire population with
personal, clinical understandings of the illnesses and health experiences of families, individuals,
and the population. Also, they articulate and translate illness experiences of diverse, often
vulnerable families, groups of individuals in a given population to the policymakers, health
planners, or assist agencies in the community to voice their aspirations and problems. Besides,
they are knowledgeable about different intervention strategies for individuals, families, or other
community groups (Cassells, 2018). They translate the knowledge from social and health
sciences families, individuals, and the group from the population targeted for advocacy,
interventions, and programs (Evans‐Agnew, Reyes, Primomo, Meyer, & Matlock‐
Hightower,2017). PHP focuses on offering health education to the communities, groups, and

individuals at risk to help them live healthy lifestyles and prevent disease by avoiding hazardous
behavior or exposure. They play a pivotal in the country's health program as they ensure that
they provide quality and respond to the community's health needs. Ideally, nurses need to
understand the needs features of the community to understand their actual health needs.
Stanhope & Lancaster (2019) highlight that nurses should evaluate how the social, economic,
and political needs impact the community's needs. Therefore, this helps the community to
identify some features like boundaries, signs of decay in the houses, housing and zoning,
recreational centers, churches, and activities. Public Health Nurses can understand the
community's needs through undertaking a Windshield Survey. The purpose of this article is to
discuss the significance of the community assessment in the PHS in the quest of gaining the
community needs.
Boundaries
The population observed was predominantly African American, with some Hispanic, Asian,
and a small percentage of Caucasians. Riverwalk Subdivision, 28,473 people, were US-born
while 2,518 were not US-born, and 3,534 people were not US citizens. The US-born population
accounts for approximately 82.47 percent, non-US born citizens, 7.29 percent, and non-citizens
10.24 percent. Therefore, the statistics indicate that the Riverwalk Subdivision community is a
diverse community as it hosts significantly large populations of foreigners. According to the US
Census Bureau, 279 people in the region moved from abroad, 3,296 from the same country,
