Description

“Social Psychology in Action” Assignment

Throughout the course, I have emphasized the everyday applicability of social psychology to real world events and experiences. Indeed, much social psychology research explicitly addresses issues in various applied domains. These are the focus of the last section of the e-book, called “Social Psychology in Action.” Your task for this assignment is to choose one of these chapters—on applications of social psychology relating to either the environment, health, or law—and include the following:

  1. (a) Provide a brief summary of this area of applied social psychology (i.e., environment, health, or law). For example, what types of questions or problems does this area involve?; and (b) give one example from the textbook chapter that illustrates how a social psychological concept, theory, or phenomenon that we’ve talked about in the course (e.g., attitudes, attributions) is applied to this area.
  1. Locate 2 research articles in this area of applied social psychology that have been published in the last 10 years and that are not cited in the textbook, and, for each, summarize (a) the purpose of the study; and (b) the findings of the study. The best way to do this is to enter relevant search terms (e.g., “identity” and “health”) into the PsycINFO/PsycARTICLES database (http://www.smu.ca/academics/databases-a-z.html). You don’t have to include the articles with your assignment. Instead, simply provide the references at the end of the paper, using APA format. For example:

Cameron, J.E. (2004). A three-factor model of social identity. Self and Identity, 3, 239-262.

  1. Describe a new hypothesis that you would be interested in testing in this area of applied social psychology. Would it involve experimental or correlational research? Explain why.

Suggested page length: Fewer than 4 double-spaced, typed pages. Try to be clear and concise.

The Mindset Theory of Action Phase on the Environment
The issue of environmental conservation and its continued deterioration has raised
concerns in the human fraternity. There are several challenges in the contemporary human
environment. Air pollution hails among the most experienced phenomenon. Since the
beginning of industrialization, atmospheric quality has degraded significantly. Release of
unpurified smoke by factories and exhaust from motor vehicles act as apt contributors to air
pollution. The effects on human health are often hefty (Zhang et al., 2018). For instance,
people succumb to respiratory diseases such as asthma and pneumonia. Water quality also
emerges among the highlights of environmental conservation. The oceans, seas, and rivers
characterize some of the most affected aquatic resources. Earth Observation instruments
uncovered that more than 30% of the oceans seem occupied by plastic material. In the future,
almost 100% of the sea shall constitute waste material (Wright et al., 2017). Remote sensing
satellites such as the sentinel reveal that oil spillages occur covering vast areas of ocean
surfaces. Marine life suffers the consequences of this pollution. Oil spillages prevent the
fusion of water and essential gases such as Oxygen and Carbon dioxide, necessary to survive
fisheries and aquatic animals, including fishes and sea mammals.
The theory of Mindset Action Phase and planning is eloquent in providing solutions
for this predicament. It stipulates the transitional phase between the aspects of motivational
states of "if it is right or wrong to do something," and the volition state of "How people do
things." These psychological depictions often dictate the difference between a class of people
who decide whether...
