The issue of health and wealth is increasingly affecting the communities due to the
inaccessibility of healthcare services caused by financial constraints. According to a survey
conducted in the U.S, more than two-thirds of Americans face medical challenges due to the high
cost of medical care bills. For instance, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic subjected
many Americans to financial difficulties due to the loss of jobs. The lack of income has led to the
consumption of household savings, which has seen many people falling into financial debt as
they struggle to pay bills and accruing medical bills. In April, I witnessed a case whereby a
family lost their grandparent due to COVID-19 because they could not meet financial
requirements to take their grandparents to hospital. The coronavirus treatment is approximated to
be $34,900. Being among the African Americans, the family could not raise the amount required
for admission into a healthcare facility as well as access the ventilator, which was short in
supply. The pandemic continues to claim lives among the minorities many of whom are African
Americans and immigrants living in deplorable areas.
