Project 3: Textual Evaluation
Introduction
Every communication occurs within a given space, directed to a specific audience, with
particular intentions or objectives. These writers or speakers of these messages use specific
moves or skills to deliver their purposes. While these spaces and intentions dictate the language
and actions used by the communicator, and while different areas attract a different approach to
message delivery, different authors or speakers specific moves, codes, and switches across
various genres. Moves are genre or audience-specific communication conventions that establish
an understanding and respect among people in a particular genre or culture. Codes are specific to
the medium used to pass the communication, and they largely determine the communication
conventions identified in moves. Switches are transitions within particular genres. For example, I
use different moves to win specific listeners' attention across different spaces like at home with
family, formally in offices such as academic tutors and my boss. I use humor to make funny clips
like in TikTok, jargon in academic writing, and slang and memes in social media. Whenever I
change spaces, my language tone changes to reflect the kind of message I want to put across and
the audience.
In the literacy narrative delivered in DALN before a public audience, the narrator made
intentional shifts from “My older sister didn’t like my Twilight addiction” to “others were
apprehensive about the text’s writing qualities because they felt revealed so much about personal

lives.” This intentional shift is carefully scripted to avoid causing misunderstandings with the
narrator's sister and avoid revealing too much information about self and the family to the public.
This switch satisfies the speaker's intention of telling a good story while not exposing much
about personal details to the public. Replacing "my older sister" with "others" also allows the
audience to focus on the story's item, rather than allowing them to start imagining my life.
The text-driven email to my instructor through Gmail space was meant to make
clarifications on reading. The move to replace the informal salutation with a formal tone. This
changed from "hey, what's up" to "Dear Mr. Smith." I note that emails are generally standard
means of communication, but an instructor deserves a proper address above all. Previous
experience through academic training and receipt of emails shows that they are mainly formal.
The memo to Jones Barbeque and Foot Massage to the boss, coworkers, and clients was
meant to communicate a change on deadline. The intentional shift employed still maintains the
formal tone but embraces a complex approach with jargon. The move from "it's due December
27th" to "based on incoming feedback, we decided to allow for a few more days…" shows the
communicator's intention to circumnavigate around a simple statement. This intentional shift to
the jargon genre is meant to ease changing the deadline and affecting everybody in different
ways. The author starts by giving reasons for the change of dates and thus leaves the memo's
recipients with little shock by the end of the message.
The funny clip shared through TikTok in social media meant to show a weekend
experience employed humor as an intentional shift. TikTok is a fun zone, and followers expect
laughter and enjoyment. Besides, a weekend experience worth sharing must elicit fun. A
weekend is meant for relaxation and merry-making, and the intentional shift worked well to
create humor. In this case, the deliberate move is both site-specific, and audience intended in that

TikTok social applications are commonly known for funny clips. Therefore something different
will only amaze the viewers.
In social media like Facebook and Instagram, intentional shifts will include moving from
formal tones to include communication codes like emoji and audience-specific language.
However, one can never use formal salutations in these social media applications. These social
media applications use a lot of images and graphics. Moving from social media to something
different like generating an email will demand a shift to a formal tone with messages brief and
straight to the point.
At family and other social gatherings, the audience and intention changes, and so do the
moves change. Sharing among family members and friends entails a free and social envir...
