1. College degrees are required for probation officers and parole officers but not necessary
for entry-level officers because probation officers and parole officers need to have critical
thinking skills and interpersonal skills needed when dealing with individuals who have
placed on probation and these are acquired through a college education. The probation
officers meet with the offenders who are placed on probation from time to time and a lot
of critical thinking skills are needed when determining the validity of a judgement placed
on a particular individual. College education equips the probation officers and parole
officers with social skills which are needed when dealing with an individual who is on
probation. The parole officers usually provide counselling to the individual on probation
and several skills such as time management, stress management and communication
skills are needed and these are acquired through college education (Carter et al., 1990).
Entry-level officers do not necessarily require college degrees because they do not get to
deal with individuals who are on probation on a day to day basis rather just to keep
people safe and arrest the ones who break the law. College education has an advantage in
the field of community correctional supervision because it equips the community
correctional officers with psychology skills that are crucial in understanding the minds of
the offenders and helps in dealing with them.

2. Probation officers do not receive enough training for the responsibilities they are
accorded this is because probation procedures keep on changing from time to time and
they are reviewed every other time thus probation officers usually get more training after
getting employed. Other than that, probation officers usually go for further training after
getting hired which involves meeting certain physical standards and professional

standards that are needed for one to conduct their duties at the highest professional level.
From those requirements from the state agencies its clear enough that probation officers
do not get enough training that would allow them to fully take on their responsibilities as
required.

3. On the job I would carry a weapon because I feel that being on the job one is usually at
risk of getting attacked by a civilian during a confrontation and having a weapon with
you will offer you more power and thus civilians will respect you more. Although
carrying a weapon comes with a lot of responsibility and requirements, its still beneficial
to the officer carrying it and the larger public of whom one is working for. The advantage
of carrying a weapon is that it largely influences how people perceive you, in that an
officer who does not carry a weapon will not be viewed in the same manner as one who is
carrying one. The one who is carrying a weapon will be feared more and persons who
might have wanted to commit a crime will definitely be hesitant to commit a crime when
they see an officer who is carrying a weapon than one who’s not carrying any weapon.
The conditions which might make it necessary for one to carry a weapon include working
in an area that is well known for a high rate of weapon possessing criminals, an area
which does not have a large number of officers who might need support in times of
danger and mainly because carrying weapons provides officers with power when it comes
to dealing with offenders this is in terms of physical & psychological ways.

4. The juvenile system should not become like the adult criminal justice system and should
go back to the idea of individualized treatment this is because individualized treatment
offers more for the juveniles in terms of programs and resources that are specifically
designed to assist in educating them and their development. Since juveniles are at a
younger age and their minds are still developing, the provision of the resources and
programs that aim to rehabilitate their behaviour and thinking have a higher rate of
succeeding and correcting them to become and grow up to become law-abiding
wholesome individuals in the society (Sheffer, J. P. 1995). Another reason why the
juvenile system should not become like the adult criminal system is that the adult
criminal system usually provides an environment that is not based on reforming rather
than punishing being their main agenda. For a young person being taken through a
system which is based on the adult criminal justice system, it might not offer them
correctional opportunities which would be important in their growth as adults.

their clients thi...
