Andrew Butler served in the Senate as a representative of South Carolina from 1846 to
1857. Butler played a critical role in the senate and aided in the creation of the current states of
Kansas and Nebraska through an act of Congress that he drafted together with other members of
Congress. Senator Butler was born in 1796 and was first elected to the senate in 1846 as a
democrat, and was re-elected for the same position in 1848 in which he served for the rest of his
lifei. As a senator, Butler was a strong pro-slavery supporter and is believed to be one of the key
figures that intensified the debate on slavery that almost split the country into two. His
contribution to the creation and signing of the Kansas Nebraska act made him one of the most
popular pro-slavery administrators at the time and led to one of the most populace cases of
violence in the senate against an abolitionist senator.
Butler first became a politician when he joined the South Carolina house of
representatives as a member for the Edgefield district, a position he held from 1824 to 1831, after
which he joined the South Carolina Senate from 1831 to 1833. While in the South Carolina
Senate, Butler played a key role in the nullification controversy. The nullification controversy
took place between 1832 and 1833 and involved efforts by the state of South Carolina to nullify
the effects of tariffs that had been imposed by the federal governmentii. Butler supported efforts
by the state government to put in place laws that would declare null and void any federal laws
that the state did not agree with. Like most people in South Carolina, Butler believed the tariffs
of 1828 were mainly meant to benefit the north and could adversely affect the economy of the
