History Course – Assignment #15
SECTION A
The term “Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men,” refers to a group of people known as the
Free Soil leaders who were against slavery. Their leadership was able to influence the bridging
of eastern and western leadership in America, which called an overall end to the horrors of
slavery. Although the group did not win the popular vote in the upcoming elections, they were
able to gain some house seats and make some changes in America. The Compromise of 1850
was an attempt to keep the Missouri Compromise in tact, but in reality, it gave the Southern
states a harsh bargain regarding slave laws, empowering the federal government. The
compromise allowed for territories to submit law suits towards the Supreme Court, even over the
people who were seeking freedom. Antislavery Americans found that the Fugitive Slave Act was

the District of Columbia; this led to many slaves running away in hopes of gaining their freedom,
and made southerners even more angry. Another reason why the war lasted so long is because
the Southern states had better generals for their military compared to the northern states, making
it more difficult for the North to win battles. Apart from this, another major advantage the south
had was its geography. A major advantage that the south had was it was fighting within its own

territory, so they knew the landscape and the geography well. The strengths of the north included
the fact that there was a greater population within the North compared to the South. However,
within the Union, there were fewer soldiers than there were in the Confederacy. The North had
an advantage from an industrial standpoint as they were familiar with railroads.
SECTION C
Some of the aspects from the two videos that captured my attention were about why
people in the Civil War fought. Lincoln had called for 75,000 people to serve in the new army
for 90 days and the response was overwhelming given that people wanted to ...
