Theme of dream in the “native son.”
The novel “Native Son,” is a novel that was written by an American of African origin,
Richard Wright. The story outlines the life of a 20 year old Bigger Thomas who was working in
white’s farm. The African-American man killed his bosses’ daughter and burnt her in Daltons’
furnace. Later on, it is discovered that Bigger killed Mary, and man hunt begins. Bigger eludes
the massive manhunt, however, at the end he is captured and shot to death. The theme of dream
is dominant throughout the story. The use of dream plays a critical role in formulating the story.
Firstly, the dream is used to give an overview of the events that would befall the AfricanAmerican man, “Bigger Thomas.” For instance, Bigger had a dream whereby he was fleeing
after a warning alert from a church bell. He saw himself in the dream, carrying a package, and a
light from the furnace illuminating his way. Finally, he opens the package and finds his head
rapped inside. Through this dream, the reader gets a synopsis of the activities that take place until
