Louie, P. A. (2017). A Phenomenological Study on the Leadership Experience of
Teleworking Leaders.
Abstract
Advances in technology are contributing to many employees' desire to use telework to
improve their work-life balance. The recruitment of talent in organizations can be aided by
telework, but few leadership models specify how leaders can use teleworks. The
phenomenological study examines the experiences of 12 leaders using telework and has an
average of 21 years' experience. The dominant themes in the interviews conducted are individual
leadership experience, employee relations, communication, monitoring, trust, and employee
issues. The teleworking leaders' experiences were largely similar and consistent with existing
research, but there were unique experiences, such as developing efficient communication
practices. The research recommendations are that further studies need to be done on teleworking
and best practices adopted by in-office leaders.
Annotation
The dissertation is a study that aimed at studying more how leaders use teleworking in
their workplaces. The research's central phenomenon is gaining more understanding of the
experience and perspectives of leaders working remotely. Louie (2017) used purposeful
sampling of leaders who have led teams working in the organization's home offices and do not
work remotely. The purposive sampling was used to get participants who have faced the same
phenomena. The population qualified to participate in the research are organizational leaders
who have teleworked for more than six months and have recently spent at least a day teleworking
at home. Most of the participants were in the US, while one was from England. Louie (2017)

relied on saturation to inform the participants for the study. The participants who were involved
in the research were 12, and the interview was conducted by phone. The interviews for the
participants lasted between 15 and 40 minutes. For the interviews, open-ended questions were
used, and these aided in eliciting responses from the participants on their experiences from
teleworking.
Evaluation of effectiveness
The qualitative strategies used in the research were effective since they aided in
understanding more about the experiences of leaders who telework. Interviews and observations
help collect useful data because a researcher can watch the participants' actions and watch for
body language changes. The open-ended questions were used to encourage the participants to
share more about their experiences, and therefore, I think the qualitative strategies applied were
effective. The study was effective in researching since it had led to the development of new
knowledge. The leaders involved in the study brought a new perspective on teleworking by
sharing their remote working experiences.
Oke, A. O. (2018). Activist Leadership: A Grounded Theory Study of Leadership
and Effective Public-Sector Performance in A Young Democracy.
Abstract
The research problem under investigation is the growth of activist leaders and their
contributions to redefining public sector governance. Oke (2018) explored skills, behaviors, and
dispositions to determine how their leadership characteristics have been altered since becoming
activist leaders. The study is about developing a grounded theory on how the leadership qualities
adopted by these activist leaders positively impact organizational performance even when the
