SUDDENLY THE WHITE SUPREMACY
Introduction
Race was used to identify a group of people with shared kinship or social connections;
however, its current use is through human invention. Race is invented to describe and categorize
people into various social groups. Gender is usually attributed to sex; one is either a male or a
female. The discovery of personal whiteness is a modern phenomenon since ancient society did
not have such a distinction (Roediger, 2008, p.1). W.E.B Du Bois linked the rise of whiteness
through American Revolution and the emancipatory civil war to the civil rights movements. Du
Bois demonstrated that early Europeans did not focus on their skin differences from those of the
non-whites. The whiteness notion brought an idea of individuals who could be owned as assets.
It created a distinction between people who could be owned and marginalized due to their skin
colour and sold as slaves (Roediger, 2008, p.2). Therefore, this essay focuses on three specific
claims found in Dave Roediger’s work, a description of how Roediger’s text is linked to three
major concepts discussed in this course, and an identification of the effects of
neoliberalism/globalization on the people of the United States and abroad.

Race
Race is a social construct that favoured the white communities while the blacks were
undermined. This was evident in Virginia when the blacks and the native communities were

subjected to slave labour. The shift from indentured servitude to slavery as the source of labour
for plantation agriculture depicted racism (Roediger, 2008, p.3). Racial practices demonstrated
white supremacy over the blacks. The emergence of race in colonial Virginia was triggered by
the civil rights movement that changed the perception that race exists outside historical
occurrences. Racial slavery was due to social divisions among settlers aimed at uniting the
whites by establishing it as a social and legal class. Africans constituted a small percentage of the
colony workforce due to racial discrimination. Europe advocated for ending the slavery of other
Europeans while African Americans were subjected to the menace. In early colonial Virginia,
labourers were subjected to harsh conditions based on their race, skin colour, and complexion.
