The Effects of Chinese Fraud
If you want to show off in China, you can choose to help the old to cross
the road. (Ye, n. d) According to this humorous and ironic headline, it refers to
a ubiquitous phenomenon in China. Chinese people call this opportunistic
behavior as“Pengci”, which is commonly practiced by the extortionist who
often plays a role of the victim and aims at obtaining compensation.(Nu, 2016)
The old, who are inferior education, are main offender. There are also some
young people who are very lazy to fraud like this. What is more, legal
loopholes offer these criminals opportunities to defraud other people.
Therefore, this fraud has negative effects on the relationship between
individuals, the values of children, and the order of the society.
Firstly, one of the effects of this fraud is to detrimentally influence the
relationships between individuals. What people will choose is to distrust others.
Therefore, it is growing distrust of other people. Currently, fewer than half of
people who respond to the survey think that most people in China are to be
believed, however, only twenty percent people think that they can trust
strangers who need help. (“China's social psychology study,” 2013) What does
this represent? If one old woman who has heart disease really falls down the
street, only twenty percent people who are around her volunteer to help her.
However, almost eighty percent people will watch and stand around her. In
China, this picture, which an old woman or man with painful expressions sits
on the road, and nobody chooses to stop to give hands to the old woman or
man, can usually be seen on the street now. Nowadays, people even prefer to
ignore these strangers who need help. Because the old are always main
criminal in this kind of fraud, “Pengci”, more and more people leaves strangers
who really need help back shadow instead of assisted hands. Hence, deep
estrangement has been produce between individuals. Furthermore, there are
less love, compassion and encouragement among people.
What is more, the values of children also will be impacted deeply and
harmfully. The next generation is the core of the whole society, because they
represent the future of country. At school, children are always educated that
they should respect the old and be active to help a great deal of people who
need help. However, this fraud happens frequently around them. The news
about “Pengci” is published on the newspaper, social media, TV and so on.
They will be confused about the right values that their parents and teachers
taught them. There is a typical example. In Guangzhou, two students after
school found an old woman lay on the street, and both of kind students still
choose to offer help to the old woman. It surprised everyone that she held their
hands at once and asked them to call their parents and give her compensation.
After police helped them to address with this event, two children could not help
crying and said, “ We will not trust anyone.” (“Qingnian,” 2015) Nevertheless,
the number of events like this example is increasing. A number of children are
exposed to these cases, which has caused harm to their spirits and changed
what their original values were.
Additionally, the fraud will produce a great deal of adverse effects to the
orders of the society, because more people will be apt to follow their steps. The
more people study those swindlers, the more adverse effects are produced. At
the beginning of the old pretend to be victim, there are also more and more
young people start to swindle others. They utilize various ways to obtain
compensation, such as crossing the road quickly, stopping driving the car
suddenly and so on. Not only do they obtain money in illegal ways, but also
they cause massive traffic jam when they always stay in the center of the
roads. It creates a vicious circle, which continuously damage the orders of the
society. Due to legal loopholes, they usually can not be sentenced to the
prison. What is worse, real victims often are to blame. Gradually, citizens will
distrust police, and they even do not have confidence in government.
With this fraud growing, the whole country will be influenced thoroughly.
On account of this kind of prevalent fraud, “Pengci”, the relationships between
people, the values of children and the orders of society have been impacted
detrimentally. Now, there are only three main negative effects. However, if
government and individuals did not take measures to change, there would
more and more detrimental effects to influence the whole country. Hence,
government should take effective measures to manage these criminals and
modify and refine the laws. Similarly, individuals also should persist in right and
bright directions, and give next children a good example to follow and study.
Only when these measures will be taken will China develop better.
