In his 1984 Noble Price lecture, bishop Desmond Tutu likened South Africa’s system of
apartheid which upheld segregation policies against non-white citizens to Nazi’s ‘Final
Solution.’ During that period, the apartheid was at its climax and Tutu aptly captured the
consequences of this evil system calling for its abolition. Bishop Tutu gave this speech as he was
receiving the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize, for his human rights activities in South Africa and the
region.
Bishop Tutu started his lecture by presenting what he referred to as the high cost of
apartheid. In particular, he averred that while apartheid was meant to devastate the majority
nonwhite population through discrimination, racism and violence, bishop Tutu also highlighted
the fact that the minority white population was also negatively affected by a system that was
