AWARDS 5-7 Awards of $500 to $2,500 preference to proposals that have the potential to advance systemic changes at UC San Diego that will exert a sustained, powerful influence on fostering understanding and daily practice of the Principles of Community ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Primary audience for the event is UC San Diego campus community. The link between the event and positively elevating our Principles of Community is clear. Event or activity encourages positive and meaningful interaction especially among campus constituents that do not typically engage or interact with one another. Project Leaders/Investigators eligible for climate grants include faculty, students, and staff from UC San Diego. Projects must be able to be completed within 1 year SUBMISSION 5 Page Limit (Double Spaced) [Maximum Doesn’t Mean You Need To Use It All] Significance Innovation Approach Sustainability SIGNIFIC ANCE Does the project address an important problem or a critical barrier to progress in advancing a climate of respect, understanding, and civility at UC San Diego? Does the project actively engage one or more of the Principles of Community? If the aims of the project are achieved, how will campus climate improve at UC San Diego? INNOVATION Does the application propose novel approaches to improving climate through the active engagement of the Principles of Community at UC San Diego? Does the application significantly and positively promote our Principles of Community? APPROACH Are the overall strategy, methodology, and analyses wellreasoned and appropriate to accomplish the specific aims of the project? Are the project leaders/investigators and collaborators wellsuited to the project? Have the project leaders/investigators and/or collaborators demonstrated how their background and skills will address and improve diversity at UC San Diego? SUSTAINABILITY What is the potential for continued support from non VC-EDI sources? Have the project leaders/investigators sought out additional funds to implement the project? What other funds (departmental, divisional, gift, grant) are already committed to this project? Will this project have a life beyond the funding provided by this award? Could this project potentially bring in additional funds to UCSD from other sources? Statement of the Problem
At UCSD, there are international students and employees from all over the world coming
to pursue their education and career within the vicinity. These admitted students and hired
employees tend to have different languages, cultural, ethnic, and racial backgrounds, making
them vulnerable to unexpected conflicts. For example, in our faculty, I recently experienced a
serious fight between an Asian-American student and a Native white American student when the
Asian-American student was teased for his unclear accent during a group discussion. Instead of
apologizing, the white student ganged up with other students of the same race to fight the other
student. In the process, the victim had to quit the group completely, and never reappeared for
future discussions. Such conflicting events continue to reoccur within the jurisdiction and have
facilitated the formation of alliances among common cultural or racial groups. Such uniform
groups do not support the legacy of UCSD’s diversity and inclusion as recommended by its
