The article “The Pristine Myth: The Landscape of the Americas in 1492” authored by
William M. Denevan explores the occupation of the Americas in the pre-Columbus and postColumbus periods. Although the article denotes vast scholarly evidence indicating that Americas
was relatively uninhabited due to low populations of natives, it speculates that the number of
natives was relatively high before 1492, and only declined following disease outbreaks.
