Improving Worker Health and Wellbeing
Work holds the promise of promoting, improving, and supporting health. However,
work also holds a significant risk of tampering with human health because of injury risks and
possibly death. Several working Americans spend most of their time in their workplace. The
significant number of time employees spend in their workplaces increases their risk of injury
and other unwanted health hazards. An occupational hazard is a common theme in the
working community since it places employees at personal and occupational risk. The
significance of occupational risk is evident in its tampering with human health to increase the
risk of occupational stress and other health problems. Occupational stress could contribute to
poor health, which would affect employees by encouraging work absence, impaired
vocational functioning, and disability. Therefore, employers and organizations need to
develop appropriate strategies to improve worker health and wellbeing and prevent workrelated injuries and illnesses.
The healthcare setting is a stressful environment characterized by high rates of
burnout, sickness absence, and distress. The high pressure on the healthcare system to
improve care quality compounds the challenge (National Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health, 2013). Therefore, healthcare professionals need safe environments to help them
improve their physical and mental health. Whole-system intervention is an appropriate
strategy to protect workers and prevent work-related injuries. The whole-system intervention
is appropriate since it incorporates the staff's needs, inputs, and contexts and involves
managing staff in the healthcare system (Brand et al., 2017). The key areas focus on in the
intervention are developing strong visible leadership, understanding local staff needs,
supporting health and wellbeing at all levels, ensuring employee engagement, and focusing
on management's capacity to improve medical practitioners' health and wellbeing.
