● 90% of individuals that die by suicide have a mental illness*
● The effects of youth suicide go beyond the departed, affecting those who
survive their demise-peers, friends, family and communities (Kostenuik 755).
● Suicide is the third leading cause of death for teenagers
● Youth Risk Survey by CDC: 8.5% of grades 9 to 12 documented attempt the
previous year (Simon 816).

Thesis: Because of undergoing extreme bodily and mental

changes and other stressful events and relationships, most
teens often become depressed, which sets room for suicidal
thoughts. School-based programs can effectively assist to
address the problem among students.

Solution #1: School-based programs
The school based programs entail:
● Screening and referring students with mental health issues
● Gatekeeper training of educationists in the issue of recognizing depression
and other mental diseases and processes for referrals to mental health
facilities (Chekstere 91).
