Lab Exercise 4: Pendulum and Calculation of g
ABSTRACT
The purpose of the lab is to see the way that the pendulum is effected as well as the way that
mass and gravity play upon the error and the force. We are going to measure the way that all of
these pieces are effected and how the pendulum deviation as well as the pendulum mass change
in many different ways depending on the force and length.
PURPOSE
To investigate the effect of varying mass, the length of a pendulum on the period. This lab will
let you see how it is possible to see the way that mass and the pendulum affect one another.
There are many ways to test these forces and that is what we are going to do in this lab.
PROCEDURE
-

Set up a pendulum as the instruction
Record all the measurements
Hold the bob at the 5° mark; release the bob and record the time for bob to complete 5
cycles. Repeat 3 times
Repeat step 3 with each angle: 10°, 15°, 20°, 25°, 30°

Question 1
What initial angle yields the smaller standard deviation? When looking for the smallest standard
deviation it is possible to see the best options and the best measurements out there. A small
standard deviation means that the data that is being represented is the most accurate.
At 15°, and Std. Dev. = 0.016

Question 2
Does the period of the pendulum’s oscillation change with the initial bob angle? Justify your
answer.
No, because T = 2π √L/g when θ < 30° What that means is that there is not a large deviation in
the way that things move and that means that it is possible to see the way that things do not
deviate. The initial angle is perfect to ensure...
