A COMPARISON STUDY– things to consider… A full description of what you heard, comparing, and contrasting the 4 movements from the symphony you choose to analyze. Use specific information (terms, etc.) that you have learned from the course in your descriptions. A majority of your paper should be a description of what you heard and a comparison of the similarities and differences between the movements of the symphony you choose to analyze.

- WRITING STYLE: Grammar, spelling, syntax, rhetoric, and addressing all of the guidelines listed above.
- How will the report be graded?
The report MUST contain ALL of the following:
- The title of the symphony and the composer.
- Write one paragraph on the composer of the work
- List each of the four movements and analyze each movement separately. Then compare each movement with the other movements.
- What were you able to discern about the rhythm, tempo, texture, meter, melody, harmony, instrumentation, and timbre of the music?
- Can you describe the form of music?
- Which instruments were prominent?
- Can you hear a musical idea being repeated, developed, or passed around between the performers?
- How did your expectations of the style, genre, ensemble, or composer affect how you experienced the music? Were you surprised by how it sounded?
- Did you already have a familiarity with this kind of music?
- How did the information from this course affect the way you understood or appreciated this music?
- How did the “non-musical” aspects of the performance affect your experience? Were you interested in the physical expressions of the performer(s)?
- Did you find the behavior of the audience striking in any way? What social conventions did you experience during the performance, and how did they impact your overall response to the concert?
- Did you enjoy the music?
- Will you seek out more music of this kind? Why or why not?
- Cite your sources at the end of the paper.
- How should the report be formatted:
- Typed, average size font (11-12), double-spaced.
- Minimum: Approximately three to four pages. Maximum: No limit! (Points will be deducted for reports shorter than three pages).
- DO NOT USE PICTURES OR GRAPHICS OF ANY KIND in this report.
- Do not use bullet points to describe the elements of a piece in your paper; remember this is an essay!
- Weight: This comparison study/analysis paper counts 30% toward your final grade in the course.
- Before you begin, review the writing tips found in Chapter 13 in your text (Putting Music Into Words) - and review the guidelines and sample report in Appendix III: Reporting on the Concert Experience in your textbook.
- How To Submit Your Report:
- Submit your report through our CANVAS class. It uses Turnitin for plagiarism. DO NOT copy directly from the Internet. The ENTIRE paper MUST be in your own words. It is strongly suggested that you type your paper using a word processor such as MSWord, making sure that you save your work as you go along. Do not type in the textbox; instead have your report saved as a document. The document formats you can upload are txt, doc, and pdf, as well as jpg, gif, and tif. Google docs and Pages docs are not acceptable.
- How to prepare for the concert listening experience:
- Look up information on the composer, musical style and, the symphony you are analyzing ahead of time. Use the Internet or reference sources (books, articles, etc.). Be sure to CITE your sources (ie: URL, book article, etc) or points will be deducted. (NOTE: Using someone else’s material as your own is considered plagiarism and is a violation of the college academic honesty code and may result in a grade of 0%.)

Symphony No 94 “Symphonie mit dem Paukenschlag”
This is an interesting symphony composed and directed by Franz Joseph Haydn, also
known as the father of symphonic music. Franz Haydn was an important figure in the
development of classical music in the 18th century ("Franz Joseph Haydn Biography"). He also
invented the composition of piano sonatas and trios. He has influenced the symphonic music
styles by his compositions and creations, as well as his interest in music in general. From this
composition, his interest is seen in the way he directs the flow of the musical instruments and his
expression, which holds enjoyment.
