In spite of their extraordinary abilities, no hero is perfect. Yet their human
weaknesses are often as instructive as their heroic qualities. Their imperfections
allow ordinary people to identify with them and to like them, for everyone has similar
psychological needs and conflicts.

The inherent concept of myths & legends is based on storytelling. And these
stories, even though they narrate extraordinary characters through exotic adventures
faced by strange yet disturbing challenges, have always been meant for a human
audience. And this is precisely why great stories, those which have endured the test
of time, are based on heroes with human imperfections. Indeed, everyday people are
more likely to identify with a character’s weakness or flaw compared to everything
else. For instance, The Epic of Gilgamesh narrates the story of a prince who is
mothered by a minor goddess and fathered by a future god. One could argue that the
mere fact that the protagonist is born in royalty makes it difficult for the audience to
connect with the challenges faced by the hero. Nevertheless, the story within the story
of The Epic of Gilgamesh is centered around death, grief, friendship, and the search
for a greater meaning of life. Indeed, through his search for eternal life, Gilgamesh is
faced with the inevitability of death linked with the inherent character of human nature.
