Please view the video entitled Innovative Approaches to Counseling African Descent People. You can start watching at the 8:05 minute mark through 29:50 mark to get the relevant information you need to complete the cultural formulation. In the video you will see the counselor demonstrate several interventions with this client based on their shared identities. CSL 640 & PSY 640 Cultural Formulation Assignment Guidelines A Cultural Formulation is an essential component of a case conceptualization. It describes the impact of culture on a person and answers the question: What role does culture play in a person’s presenting issues? (Sperry & Sperry, 2012). A detailed lecture, discussion and practice using this model will be provided to students prior to submitting assignments. This is a scholarly assignment meaning that it needs to follow APA style, formatting and references. The paper should be approximately 4 pages (maximum). You will receive a case study from your instructor from which you need to write a paper that will include the following elements: 1. Introduction- Brief explain of cultural formulation and introduction to paper. 2. Elements of a Cultural Formulation (based up Sperry & Sperry, 2012 model) a. Cultural identity—Client’s sense of belonging to a particular group or groups. b. Acculturation and acculturative stress—Level of adaptation to dominant culture and stress from acculturation which will include psychosocial difficulties. c. Cultural explanation/explanatory model –What are the person’s beliefs regarding the cause of their issues, condition or impairment? d. Culture vs. personality—Identify the extent of the impact of cultural dynamics and/or personality dynamics on the presenting issues in the case. 3. Culturally sensitive treatment: List two interventions would you implement with this client that would demonstrate cultural sensitivity and competence? 4. Conclusion/Summary Sample of Cultural Formulation from Sperry & Sperry: Geri identifies herself as a middle class African American but has little interest and no involvement with the African American community (cultural identity). She is highly acculturated, as are her parents, and there is no obvious acculturative stress (culture-acculturation). She believes that her depression is the result of stress at work and a “chemical imbalance” in her brain (cultural explanation). There are no obvious cultural factors that are operative. Instead, it appears that Geri’s personality dynamics are significantly operative in her current clinical presentation (culture v. personality). CSL 640 & PSY 640 For the purposes of this assignment, you will explain these factors in greater depth, creating at least 1 paragraph per element (a-d). Please use headings to identify each section and subsection of the paper. 11 Oct 2016 Student Name: Lakshmanan, Seetha Page 1 of 2 Create PDF Assignment: Cultural Formulation 1 Submitted: Sep t emb er 24, 2016 Course/Term: PSY640I - I : SOCIAL & CULTURAL FOUNDATIONS ( 2016 2016-2017 - Fall GR Day ) Comments: See attached documents Grade: 41.5/55 Assessed:Freund, Robert (October 10, 2016) Cultural Formulation Assessment Rubric E xc e l l e nt Co mpe t e nc e ( 5 . 0 0 0 pt s ) Abo v e Av e ra ge Co mpe t e nc e ( 4 . 5 0 0 pt s ) Av e ra ge Co mpe t e nt ( 3 . 9 0 0 pt s ) Be l o w Av e ra ge Co mpe t e nc e ( 3 . 5 0 0 pt s ) Una c c e pt a bl e ( 3 . 0 0 0 pt s ) Introduction Exceeds of cultural expectations formulation and client issues (2.000, 10%)  Explains Missing one cultural element formulation, introduces the paper and briefly explains client’s presenting problem(s) Missing more than one element Missing the substance of this section or section missing Cultural identity (2.000, 10%) Describes the client’s sense of belonging to a particular group or groups Missing one element Missing more than one element  Missing the substance of this section or section missing Acculturation Exceeds and expectations acculturative stress (2.000, 10%) Level of adaptation to dominant culture and stress from acculturation  Missing one element Missing more than one element Missing the substance of this section or section missing Cultural Exceeds explanation expectations & explanatory model (2.000, 10%) Beliefs regarding the cause of the distress  Missing one element Missing more than one element Missing the substance of this section or section missing Culture vs personality (2.000, 10%) Extent of impact of culture and/or personality Missing one element  Missing more than one element Missing the substance of this section or section missing Provides at least two culturally sensitive interventions and rationale  Missing one element Missing more than one element Missing the substance of this section or section missing Exceeds expectations Exceeds expectations Informed Exceeds Cultural expectations Treatment and Explanation (3.000, 15%) N/A 11 Oct 2016 Page 2 of 2 Conclusion (2.000, 10%) Exceeds expectations Effectively summarizes the main points from the cultural formulation and treatment recommendations Missing one element Missing more than one element  Missing the substance of this section or section missing APA style, formatting and references (3.000, 15%) Exceeds expectations Follows APA format and style, including at least 5 scholarly references  Formatting and style contains several errors and includes fewer than 5 references Formatting and style contains frequent errors and less than 2 references Does not follow APA style Writing mechanics (2.000, 10%) Writing enhances the overall message of the paper Writing does not violate any grammar or spelling conventions  Writing contains several errors of grammar, spelling and sentence structure Writing contains frequent errors of grammar, spelling and sentence structure Writing style detracts from the message and the understandability of the paper 74.800 pts 74.8%

Culture Formulation

Cultural formulation is an efficient survey of a man's cultural foundation and the part
of a culture in the appearance of side effects and brokenness. It incorporates the cultural
identity of the individual, cultural definitions, cultural elements identified with nature and
individual working, cultural components and a general examination of how cultural
contemplations may impact them.
Cultural Identity
Adisa is an African studying abroad. He identifies with African cultures such as
libations. According to Sperry & Sperry (2012), cultural identity is the sense of belonging of
a person towards a particular group or ethnicity. It is formed through the socialization
procedure and the impact of social organizations like the family, the instruction framework
and the broad communications. Cultural identity is a means of understanding own self, those
around as and specialization of people into cultural groups. The identity of individuals and
groups includes both components of individual decisions and the reactions and states of mind
of others. The identity that a person needs to state and which they may wish others to see
