Reasons why people use mood altering substances
Stress
The modern world is full of stresses and strains. People going about their day to day
activities trying to make ends meet involved with a lot of strains. Stresses in our social and
economic life may lead one to use of drugs since after use they are relieved of the pressure
instantly. Some o f these drugs are viewed as a way of relaxation and a way to calm the mind.
It is true drugs are good at relaxing the mind, but the side effects are very disastrous (Blair,
2012).
Peer pressure.
It is also a very common reason why a majority of the people start to use drugs. When
people see their peers abusing this mood altering substances, and they see it as cool, they are
also likely to start using the drugs. People seeing role models, celebs, family members using
these substances, they will also probably start taking the drugs since they see it as cool. The
media today is full of drug references which promote their intake and it is regarded as the
best thing ever. This effect on the people will make them start using the drugs("Why do
people become addicted?", 2011).
Easy access
Mood-altering substances are readily available with a lot of ease. Drugs are available
in the streets neighbourhood and even in schools. This makes a lot of people susceptible to
their use, and its easy availability means high temptations to use it. Most people use drugs as

a way of self-medication. With the availability of these substances, it becomes easy to feed
their habits. If the drugs were not easily available many people would find hard accessing
them hence not easily used. Easy availability means that majority of the people who would
want to experiment this substance can do so with ease since they will not have to strain to get
the drugs. Easy access has led to the usage increase (Blair, 2012).
