Fur Trade
The fur trade was at its peak from the 17th to the mid-19th century as a vast commercial
enterprise across contemporary Canada (Croll, 2014). Beneficiaries tapped the industry to satisfy
and sustain the European's demand for felt hats. Like any other lucrative industry, the fur
business attracted many competitors, and the trade encouraged Europe to explore and settle in
new territories. For example, the fur trade financed social, economic, and colonial relations
between Europeans and indigenous people (Croll, 2014). Missionary works were at the core of
this contact, but each player (company) used a unique strategy to access raw material. In this
discussion, the strategies of the largest rivals in the fur trade, Hudson Bay Company (HBC) and
North West Company (NWC), are assed in detail.
Fur Trade Strategies of English and French
The Treaty of Paris in 1763 transferred Canada to England from French (Foster & Eccles,
2013). The treaty was formed after a seven-year war between the British and French, and the
former emerged as the victor. This historic move had lasting consequences, including creating
new horizons for competition in the fur industry. Some merchants withdrew from the Hudson's
Bay Company and grew the North West Company and the two entities because of historic rivals.
