Diversity and nursing practice
Introduction
A worldwide issue, diversity which encompasses all areas from the race, age, gender,
culture, and living statuses, is experienced in all areas of community service nursing care
included. As a healthcare provider, being comfortable with diversity or otherwise embracing
diversity is key in providing quality service and offers to the patients regardless of the notable
differences (Armada & Hubbard, 2010). In nursing practice, the target is bridging the gap
brought about by diversity by applying medical culture, beliefs and practices while offering
quality service to the patients. It is a fact that at least once a week, a healthcare professional
will encounter at least one patient of either diverse culture, age, gender, living status or race.
According to the American nurses association, diversity is the awareness that people exist
with different beliefs, thoughts and priorities across the patient population.

Age
While offering nursing care, patients of different age groups each require different
interventions from how you communicate to these patients, perform assessments, and even
handle it as a general procedure. Special focus is put on the elderly patients and the toddlers

patients, it is essential to ensure that communication is clear, thus ensuring the patient
understands what is asked of them. Dealing with elderly patients who sometimes are not
accompanied by their kin means as a nurse, ensuring the patient is comfortable and free to
express themselves. The same happens with children who probably are scared of the new
environment and thus hold back and refrain themselves from talking. In both age groups,

ensuring that the patient is comfortable and understands what is being communicated to them
is important. As a nurse, it is a duty to create a conducive environment for both patients and
guide them on how to proceed with the treatment process, even if it means changing one’s
approach to different situations dealing with age presented to them. Older people also suffer
from withdrawal symptoms and thus refrain from clearly expressing themselves. It is
essential as a nurse to communicate with these people and make them comfortable, thus
ensuring that these elders can express themselves clearly.
Culture
In multicultural states, meeting people from different cultures as a health practitioner
is a norm and thus the need to know how to adapt oneself as a healthcare provider in different
situations. Nurses dealing with culturally diverse patients have to adapt to the more
demanding and challenging experiences with cultural differences playing a major role in
these situations. With different cultures comes a difference in practices and beliefs in that
