The Social Contract Theory (SCT) is an ethical perspective that states that morality consists
of rules and guidelines that govern people’s behavior and which any rational person would
accept to follow in condition that other people will also accept them (O’Mathúna et al., 2018).
Therefore, SCT is a consultative ethical framework that considers consensus as the most
effective way of promoting morality. In other words, if every person agreed to follow the law,
crime and other wrongdoings would reduce significantly since everyone has a moral
responsibility to protect and respect the law.
For the effectiveness of social contract theory, two assumptions are made; people will not
hurt each other, everybody will keep their word to follow the set rules and guidelines. However,
since there is no guarantee that people will not hurt each other and they will keep their
agreement, the government is empowered to enforce the laws and the agreements made in this
theory. Therefore, the government acts as an overseer to ensure that the agreed policies are
followed by all. According to this theory, the government exists to enforce the necessary rules
and guidelines for social living while morality facilitates social living.
