communication have also evolved. Social media is now considered as the major tool for
interacting and communicating with others. In addition to being used for personal purposes,
the use of this evolved mode of communication has also infiltrated into workplaces and the
health care sector is no different. Social media has provided health care workers a convenient
way of interacting and communicating with coworkers and patients. Healthcare providers
also utilize the power of social media to educate the general public by conveying health tips,
facts, and important information to them. However, the many benefits of social media come
at the cost of privacy risks and increased moral and ethical obligations.
Hospital Policy on Smartphones and Social Media
There is no denying the fact that in modern-day, social media has an immense impact
on human life. The use of mobile phones and tablets has further increased the consumers’
ease of access to social media in workplaces. The healthcare sector has also witnessed the
growing popularity of social media among health professionals. Health care workers continue
to spend time on their smartphones, using social media, when they are in the hospital,
especially at lunchtime and between shifts. This has increased the responsibility of hospital
administrations to enforce strict policies that regulate the type of content workers post on
social media. Lenient policies can lead to adverse consequences for the hospital as well as the
staff (Pillow et al., 2014). It was, undoubtedly, the result of faulty policies on part of the
hospital administration that the Naval Hospital incident took place where staff nurses found
themselves part of a legal and ethical breach.
