Genre and Register Analysis
1: Introduction
The importance of language, virtually in every imaginable field, cannot be underestimated.
Language makes it easy for individuals to communicate to make enquiries, pass a message,
direct among other numerous uses. In linguistics, there are various subcategories of language
such as register, dialect, style which are indicative of the language varieties.

The focus of this paper, however, is on the analysis of discourse with more emphasis on genre,
style and register. Broadly, discourse analysis is concerned with language both in written and
spoken forms. For significant communication to take place, the participants’ culture and society
play an instrumental role. According to Biber and Conrad (2019), written discourse has been the
center of interest from enthusiasts and researchers raising recognition to a field that has morphed
to what it is today. The aforementioned genre, style and register are integral in discourse analysis
especially in the written context. The micro and macro linguistics play a significant role in
understanding written discourse. The purpose of this paper is to discuss advertisements and
notices through the lens of genre and register as defined by Biber and Conrad (2019)
3: Results and Discussion
For effective communication to take place, there has to be an established relationship between the
participants whether they are meeting for the first time or have known each other for a long time.
In this case, where the focus is on advertisements and public notices, the writer and the reader of
the content have to share a certain aspect of background to effectively convey a message that is
understood in the right way. According to Kay and Dudley-Evans (1998), it is important for
understand the basis on which the writer and reader of ads and notices relate. In the case where
there is a disconnect between the two participants, the intended message would be lost prior to
achieving its purpose.
4: Method
There are numerous methods used for genre analysis of notices and advertisements. For instance,
a keen assessment of different notices points to the initial intention of the writer. Notices fall under

instructional genre and based on the intention of the writer; other components of language may be
included in the text to improve the effectiveness of the message. According to Dubrovskaya
(2012), genre analysis is pegged on the intention of communication. The use of aspects of color or
capitalization are all aimed at achieve a specific communication goal.
