This course has been much interesting since I was able to learn about sustainability in
business. It is a fundamental issue since it controls businesses from exploiting the resources
available. Sustainability refers to the programs and the initiatives that help in preserving a
particular resource. It is meeting the current needs without affecting future needs. Every country
has its sustainability, and therefore the economic and social development needs to be well defined.
Sustainability is classified into four pillars, which are human, social, economic, and environmental
sustainability. Human sustainability involves achieving specific goals that affect the quality of
human life. Social sustainability involves recognizing the relationships between the people in the
society. In the business aspect, social sustainability involves recognizing the relationships among
the various stakeholders in the business that includes; employees, suppliers, financiers, and
customers.
I have also learned about economic sustainability that involves the practices that support
long-term economic growth. This involves micro-farming, expansion of solar energy, innovations
in water and air systems, and sustainable farming. Finally, environmental sustainability involves
interacting responsibly with the planet. this involves protecting the natural resources from being
exploited for the sake of future generations (Dyllick and Muff, 2016, pp 223-286). Sustainability
enables the business to have enough resources required for daily operations. Humanity is being
enhanced through the protection of resources from extinction. Sustainability is an essential concept
of protecting natural resources such as water and mineral resources.
A business goes green by pursuing knowledge and practices to achieve a friendly
environment sustaining its natural resources. One of the benefits of a business going green is to
increase productivity and reduction of production costs. This is by having efficient technology
reducing the energy used at work. It helps in promoting innovation, such as solar and wind energy,

3

that reduces air pollution. It also promotes the brand image and increases its competitive
advantage. Going green for the business increases the future preparedness for legislation and costs.
By going green, the business is able to have a healthier and safer working place(Dyllick and Muff,
2016, pp 223 -286). The employees are motivated since they work in a conducive environment
hence becoming more productive. Going green also helps in establishing community relationships
through the building of corporate social responsibility. Ethics are also promoted in the business
encouraging society to emulate them.
The popularity of sustainability refers to the growing awareness of the sustainable business
aiming at creating a win-win between the business and humanity. Sustainability helps in the
promotion of a better economy that is characterized by fewer wastes and pollution and few
emissions. Systems thinking refers to the practice of exploring the interrelationships, perspectives,
and boundaries in the environment. Systems thinking helps in understanding the flow of the
systems to reduce inconsistencies. The sustainable management strategy aims to provide plans for
improving people's lives, the environment, and future generations.
The government needs to protect the businesses from using the available resources
irresponsibly bypassing regulations that protect the public. One of the areas that the government
needs to promote sustainability is setting clear policies and regulations on technology and
pollution(Bocken et al., 2014, pp 41-97). The business needs to be guided on the innovations that
protect the environment, such as recycling waste products. Secondly, the government needs to
lower taxes for the business that enhances sustainability. This will motivate many businesses to go
green to enjoy government benefits. Groups that develop voluntary programs also need to be
promoted by lives. Allocating them with resources that would enable them to accomplish their set
objectives. This includes waste regulations. With the help of the government and other non-

governmental organizations, the businesses are able to achieve sustainability, preventing conflict
with the locals by irresponsible use of the resources.
The triple bottom line impacts the social, economic, and environment, thus attaining
sustainability. Business survival largely depends on sustainable business dimensions: economic,
environmental, and social interests, which work interrelatedly and interconnectedly. This practice
focuses not only on helping people, saving the earth, and earning profits but also on the three
altogether. All businesses' long-term interest is set for the resources' sustainability and the
business's success and survival. For instance, McDonald's achieved the bottom line by reducing
their food packaging, helping the environment, and improving public health. On top of it, they
achieved economic interests by reducing the materials' costs and disposal.
Another case that shows well how the triple bottom line used to the fitness of all the three
