The Wedding Banquet is a 1993 film that is about a gay Taiwanese man who ends up
marrying a woman from mainland China in order to get her a green card and appease his
nagging parents. Things get rocky for the man when his parents come to the United States to
plan his wedding and he has to conceal the true identity of his partner. Inspired by the
meddlesome parents’ visit, the characters, Wai-Tang and his partner Simon, see the visit as
the perfect chance to lessen the pressure to get married. They decide to have Wei-Wei, a
female tenant of Wi-Tung’s and a struggling artist from mainland China, to pose as his
fiancé, while his partner Simon pretends to be his landlord. Things turn out badly for the two...
