A Study on the Impact of Technology Followership in Global Technology Companies
Introduction
Background Information
Being a leader or a follower can make the difference between two firms in the technology
industry. A technological leader is a firm that introduces noble innovations as the pioneer in the
given market or industry (Pantano, 2016). The noble technology becomes the part of the strategic
approaches of the firm as value gets derived from the incumbency enjoyed in comparisons to late
entrants. Both aspects come with their strengths and weaknesses. On the contrary, a technology
follower is one that waits for the initial noble inventions to take place and adopts them in own
ways to solve organizational issues (Novikov, 2016). The strategy involves copying from the
leaders and improving on their technological breakthroughs to benefit more form the creativity.
The choice to be a technological follower avoids the weaknesses of being the leader.
While a technological leader enjoys several advantages, the shortfalls of the position attract the
followers to use the contrary strategy (Gilbert, 2016). For instance, the technology leader enjoys
first-mover advantage, low level of rivalry, and higher profitability. Also, the leader enjoys
competitive advantage of market intelligence that empowers to learn and evolve to suits the
needs of the volatile digital industry (Uhl-Bien et al., 2014). However, the leader faces higher
risks of venturing into the unknown, incurring higher costs in the process of learning through
trial and error, and bears the threat of cannibalization of available products.
These shortcomings of the technology leader lure the followers to use the contrary
technic. They gain in choosing the strategy by incurring lower costs due to having learned from
the leaders what works and what fails. They also benefit from the ability to adapt quickly to
changes as they have higher level of flexibility than the leaders (Saraih et al. (2018). For

instance, their level of investment in research and development is low enough to warrant changes
in tactics moving forward – something the leaders can hardly manage within a short period of
time. Particularly, the followers can improve on the techniques and products of the leaders to
appeal even better to the consumers than the pioneers. Indeed, switching costs in followers is
faster and easier than in the leaders.
The existence of benefits and risks in being both the leader and the follower leads to the
dilemma of choosing the strategy to use as a technology firm. While the leaders need boldness
and high risk appetites, the followers may win better than them in a market due to their numerous
advantages (Gilbert, 2016). Nevertheless, the possible transfer of capabilities from the leaders to
