Description

According to J.F. Bierlein, one of the most “astounding” and “interesting” consequences of the “encounters between European and the various peoples of Africa, Asia, and the Americas … was the recognition that cultures vastly separated … by time and geography had religious practices and myths” that were strikingly similar, i.e. had parallels, common themes, subjects, and characters. (267) For your term paper proposal, I would like you to propose a similarity that you see between one of the classical myths we have covered (or will cover) in class (Ramayana, Metamorphoses, Trickster Tales, or one of the many myths in Parallel Myths) and a modern myth of your own choosing (film, story, etc.). If you choose one of the myths from Parallel Myths, you must research and find an extensive, original source of the myth- email me for suggestions/advice. You are encouraged to think for yourself and come up with an interesting topic that highlights a parallel you find engaging.

Please provide a clearly marked thesis (with an *) and MLA citations of the various myths you have picked. In addition to your topic, thesis, and sources, you must also pick a theorist / philosopher from pp. 267-303 in Parallel Myths to ground your thinking and support your proposal. Use at least one quote from that theorist or philosopher to illustrate your concept. Your proposal should be no more than 350 words.

Similarity Between Parallel and Modern Myths
Introduction
Mythology is an assembly of narratives which target divinity or people's thoughts that
become a reflection of the world. Myths get invented to present dominance within reality for
people that may fall under divinity or heroism depending on the narratives displayed. For
such a reason, there is a resemblance in myths worldwide since they aim to associate time
frames. Fuentes states that “Myth is a past with a future, exercising itself in the present”
(Bierlein 272). The essay aims at displaying the similarity between parallel and modern
myths through the concept of human reality dominance associated with a time component.
Myth expresses belief in the world people exist in through heroism. Modern myths
use a technological tool such as movies displayed in cinemas or televisions in private
premises to talk about heroism. The similarity between current and parallel myths arises
when showing human beings as somewhat gods and how their acts appear supernatural.
Today's superhero embodiments contrasted to heroes from the prehistoric Greek alongside
Norse folklores (Bigelow). Nonetheless, characters within movies or comic books today are
not precisely similar to characters in past myths. The link between the past and present myths
is the motivation and psychological importance of telling these narratives.
People relate to stories that involve other human beings, inclusive of humans with
supernatural powers. Individuals get drawn to both past and today’s heroes since they act as
an inspiration. Myths go beyond logic and rely heavily on belief. It explains why many heroic
narratives flourish and progress by making adjustments to the superiority of heroic

characters. The same applies to religious stories. Myths make gods into people with superior
influences and create such an outlook when talking about God's supremacy (Bierlein 274).
Therefore, tales can display the importance of human beings and the impact made in the
world.
