Description

The following worksheet contains two sets of client statements. In the first set, select the best question a human service worker might use to elicit more appropriate information. Discuss why your selection is best, as well as why the other choices may not be as helpful. Remember, more than one question might be appropriate, so your rationale for choosing the one you have is important.

In the second set of statements, you will formulate a reflection of content (and feeling, if appropriate) that responds well to the client's concerns.

Client Statements Set 1
1. Client: I can’t believe it. I’ve been doing so well, but things just don’t seem to be working out.
I know that I’m about to get fired.
a. Have you been getting to work too late?
b. Are you tired at work?
c. What’s been going on that’s not working?
d. Have things been distracting you?
Rationale: The right answer for this client is C. This question tends to dig deeper towards the
root of problem, furthermore it also applies empathy and revolves around the issue. Question A
assumes that the professional knows what is going on already with out giving the client a chance
to explain his issue. Question B is a vague question that fails to address the issue at hand while D
hypothesizes that the Client will get fired. This is not the impression that one would want the
client to have.

2. Client: My mother just doesn’t understand.
a. What doesn’t she understand?
b. How old are you?
c. What about your father?
d. Are other people affected by her?
Rationale: A is the best as the professional seeks to understand why the mother is behaving is
that way based on the client’s opinion. It is important to get the information from an objective
point of view. Asking the clients age is direct and the question about the father rationalizes that
attention can be switched and focused to another party. As for question D it is completely out of
the topic.

3. Client: I keep getting in bad relationships, over and over again. It’s like I go out and look for
the worst person possible, then get attached.
a. Why do you do that?
b. What was your relationship with your parents like?
c. How are these people bad for you?
d. Are you in a relationship now?
Rationale: C is the best question with this regard. It does not only touch on the issue of the
parties the client is dating but also the client’s experiences. A is a judgmental question while B
tends to diverge form the topic. D is also a good question as it helps one understand what kind of
problem is being faced at the present moment

4. Client: I broke the window...
