Reflection assignment: SDOH and resources in the Memphis area Naomi is a 27-year-old single mom that recently immigrated to Memphis from Bogota, Columbia. She is not registered as an immigrant and she does not have a work visa. She works as a private housekeeper for several families and has a total income of $1600/month. Her rent is $1000/month, her utilities are $150/month, her car payment is $200/month, and her car insurance is $125/month. Her landlord has just informed her that rent will be raised to $1200 a month but is giving her a one-month grace period to decide whether she will pay for the increased rent or to vacate the property. Fortunately, her mother provides childcare while she works, but her limited income leaves her with very little money at the end of the month for food, clothing, or medical needs. Her employers do not provide health insurance, but her 4-year-old daughter is coughing, sniffling, and running a fever of 102. Instructions 1. First, carefully read the case study. Then review the relevant information from the powerpoint lectures, websites, and handouts in the social determinants of health section of the course. Read carefully through the remaining instructions below and also review the attached grading rubric for this assignment. 2. Next, get ready to draft your paper. This paper will have 3 parts-a cover page in APA format, a 3 page paper (divided into the 3 sections described below) in APA format, and references in APA format. 3. REFLECTIVE ESSAY ON NAOMI

Introduction
Social determinants of health are factors that influence a person's health status of a
person, the author in this reflective paper, will look onto such factors affecting Naomi. Such
factors include social support, income, education and literacy, employment, gender, culture,
genetics and physical environments.
Social determinants of health affecting Naomi
This reflective essay focuses on the social determinant of health regarding Naomi, an
immigrant living in Memphis. From the case study, one of the significant social determinants
of health affecting her is her income and social status (Desmond & Western, 2018). Naomi
earns a monthly salary of $1600, where the considerable chunk of her pay goes towards rent
being $100. This leaves her with only $600, consumed through utilities at $150 and a car
payment of $150 every month. The car insurance also consumes a bit of her salary consuming
$125 every month. With such a pay check, Naomi gets hard to afford medical care for her
child, herself, and her mother, thus rendering her helpless.
The second social determinant of health is employment (Desmond & Western, 2018).
Even though Naomi is employed to take care of families, they pay they offer her enough to
enable her to afford health services and health insurance. This has rendered her helpless when
it comes to her child's health, which is four years and is experiencing coughs, sniffling and
has a running fever. Besides, her employers do not offer her health insurance; thus, it is all up
to her to take care of her family health needs.
The third social determinant of health is the physical location (Desmond & Western,
2018). Naomi being an immigrant, who is not registered, puts her at risk of being deported.
Further, her lack of work visa does not allow her to be considered for any formal employment
that could be having a good pay, thus helping her to be able to afford adequate and quality
care for her family. Besides, she leaves in a place where the landlord wants to hike the rent up

to $1200, which is too much for her as all her income will be going towards rent, car and
insurance, thereby leaving her in a cold situation on matters health.
Resources available in Memphis to help Naomi meet the basic need for her and her
daughter
Among the resource available in Memphis to help Naomi meet her basic needs is
Memphis Centre for immigrants. This organizational resource will help her get documents,
making it easier for her to get access to a work visa that will allow on matters (Abrego,
2018). The other access is through the Memphis Christian church, which will help Naomi
donations all the basic needs that she might need. This church also offers resources that can
help Naomi get basic and advanced education, giving her an upper hand of job search
(Abrego, 2018).
One of the significant needs that could assist with these needs is the resource of
education. Her current job is not well paying simply because she is undocumented and does
not have a working visa. However, upon gaining those documents, she will be able to look
for well-paying jobs, making it easier for her to take care of her needs. With the right
education, she will be better positioned to get her desired employment opportunity (Miller et
al., 2018).
Memphis offers a relief package for all undocumented and unemployed individuals.
This package includes an aid and relief package that Naomi can use to her advantage in
ensuring that her daughter health is well taken care of (Eisen, 2017).
Ideas essential for the health care team assisting Naomi and her daughter
One of the determinants of health addressed, in this case, is the case on employment.
The employers to Naomi have not offered her any health insurance. It is important to note
that a health policy in Memphis requires employers to provide health insurance to their

employees (Eisen, 2017). Therefore, Naomi’s daughter health issue would be addressed if her
employers did put this health policy in motion.
The second concept is on family dynamics. Naomi is getting help from her mother regarding
taking care of her child while she is in work. This shows the love and compassion that
manifests in a family. This concept is essential as Naomi can continue to work while her
mother takes care of her child's health needs.
Lastly, the concept of self-management relates very well in this case. Naomi's failure
to manage her income is a way that she can afford health care is sole because her monthly
wages are meagre. If her wages were sufficient, Naomi would be able to manage herself the
right way which would be an advantage in addressing her health care issues together with
those of her child as there would be enough finances (Whittle et al., 2020).
Conclusion
This essay indicates that social determinant of health; such as the one Naomi is
experiencing could be used to either build or break a person’s health status. Therefore, the
affected individuals must ensure that they find a way out, such as looking for relief that might
