The Circle was dream-like, at least for Mae. Her former place of employment was

undesirable. The Circle facilitated her self-sufficiency. She could finance all her needs, allowing
her parents to cater for other needs. The only thing she admired about her former place was the
bond she had developed with her friend Annie. At The Circle, “Customer Experience” is an arm
dealing with customer service. It entails personal responses to The Circle’s clientele. People
working at the “Customer Experience” handle queries which would then be rerouted to another
party in the organization for a customized response.
Having come from a place where life was unbearable, The Circle was an overwhelming
experience for Mae. The place was so perfectly put together, that the thought of working at such
a place never crossed her mind. The place seemed utopic. Her fascination can be seen through
her description of The Circle. The composition makes reference to terms such as the
Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, and The Enlightenment to indicate the transition Mae has
undergone from her past livelihood to this. Due to the vastness of the place, subdividing it into
sections and giving them animate capabilities made it less impersonal (Eggers, 2014).
The authentication system TruYou brought some calm into the mayhem. Unlike before
where misconducts could go unpunished due to anonymity, the Internet was now civilized.
TruYou made numerous facets of the internet accessible at a go. The system was beneficial to
users since they could carry out multiple activities at a go. Also, businesses had access to who
was buying what, giving a whole new meaning to marketing. Mae’s flirtation with Francis was
cut short by Annie. The second day at The Circle was engaging as well. Mae was fully integrated
into the company’s systems and even got a personal phone and tablet, with all her data backed to
the cloud (Eggers, 2014).

Zing is a social platform the company uses to interact with its stakeholders. Mae was

expected to zing at least ten times a day. All the same, there was no limit to this, and she could
zing as much as she felt like. The thing also allowed suggestions from people in The Circle. Mae
could comment on any particular facet of the company. The Inner Circle and the Outer Circle
were platforms for social feeds. The Inner Circle was concerned with the company alone,
whereas the Outer Circle could be used for matters external to The Circle.
LuvLuv is software used for dating. It gathers detailed information over the Internet,
about a search, such as a person one intends to date. The presentation was alright for the most
part. Due to the involvement of Francis, however, Mae was placed in the limelight making her
uncomfortable. She anticipated Francis mentioning her; hence, dropped her stomach to her feet
(Eggers, 2014). She was caught in a moment she could not escape. Leaving the function would
only attract unwarranted attention. As such, she opted to sit it through. The audience was totally
engaged. Apart from Mae who was feeling off, the rest of the attendees were having a great time.
Josiah and Denise questioned Mae following an incidence that had occurred during the
weekend. Like any other grill, the two started off by asking Mae friendly questions. At what
point she could feel everything was not okay. The problem arises from her complacency and
disengagement in the company’s activities. Despite her high ratings, she is not as active on The
Circle’s online platforms. She is being grilled over her low participation (Eggers, 2014). Being in
a technology company that extensively uses social media, members are urged to participate
actively in these activities.
