The Hawthorne Studies
According to the video, automobile production was responsible for setting off the modern
American industrial revolution. The automobile manufacturing by Ford Company boosted
both employment and wages. This economic boost fostered the demand for goods allowing
companies to expand their production capacity. Other factories soon began mass production of
goods and services that set America on stage for the industrial revolution era.
At the time of the Hawthorne experiments, the working conditions were poor. Factory owners
emphasized output rather than the input of its human resources. Employees were considered
an extension of machines thereby disregarding their social needs in the industrial setup. This
attitude led to long working hours, autocratic supervision, and a lack of employee benefits.
