Overview/Summary
The “Sharp Market Change in Commodity Prices Take Companies to the Edge: From the
Oil Capital of Europe to a Small Mining Town in Australia” case study, presented a ripple effect
of how the fall in prices of various globally used products could adversely affect communities
both locally and internationally. Basing on the 2015-2016 drop in commodity prices particularly
oil across the globe, the periodical captured how Aberdeen, a city that was once dependent on oil
and revered as the oil capital of Europe had been brought to its knees with tax receipts associated
with oil trading falling from £742m in the last quarter of 2014, to £168m in the first quarter of
2015 (Dawson & Andriopoulos, 2014). Similar incidents were replicated in a small town located
in South Australia to the extent that the economy greatly contracted with massive loss of jobs
becoming rampant and firms that were once booming such as Martelco Hire going into
liquidation. It was only through government support that firms employing huge numbers of
workers were able to remain afloat, an aspect captured through the case of Arrium Steelworks.

Critical Aspects

Pertaining to the case study presented above, the first critical aspect that was visible was
that towns or regions that are solely dependent on a single product, or service as the major
income earner tend to be hit the most whenever the price of the given commodity or service
