1 Society Before Technological Advances Tisha Boggs APMT/315 Technology and Society Sheila R. Dupuis, Psy.D. University of Phoenix January 19, 2021 2 SOCIETY BEFORE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCES What was society like before each technological advancement? Even without technological advancement, society had its distinct ways of doing things. There were no cell phones in the early days, and people used landlines and payphones for communication. The use of these devices required prior planning and memorization of the phone numbers. Payphones permitted users to use change to make calls. The gadgets were placed in public places, such as parks. When a call recipient was unavailable, the phone rang continuously until the caller ends it to look for them later. An answering machine resembled voice mail, although it utilized cassette tapes; thus, one could leave a message to the sender. There was no internet in the early centuries; thus, people used physical means such as typewriters to compose emails delivered through delivery mail by a man on a horse instead of an email carrier in a mail truck. During this period, people could not access things online, and the world was peaceful and orderly as people followed their cultures and practices (Sutton, 2013). Before technological advancement, there were no televisions; therefore, children spent time with their caregivers learning how things are done, playing with their fellows, and most entertainments were physical through cultural events. The benefits of not having each technology Technology became an integral aspect of today’s society and influences how people undertake their roles, lifestyles, and preferences. Even though technology has immensely contributed to modern operations' advancement, its absence in the early decades cushioned the societies from its repercussions. First, cell phones' absence made children sufficiently socialized by their parents, caregivers, and guardians. Thus, kids had time for constructive engagements instead of spending time on screens like modern kids (Silver et al., 2019). The absence of the 3 internet cushioned children from exposure to harmful content, primarily through social media, ruining their morality and engagement in constructive activities. The absence of television made people appreciate their cultures through planned cultural events and nurtured talents as people participated in games during their free time. What were the consequences or issues because each technological advancement was absent? Societies designed mechanisms for executing their functions despite the lack of technological advancement during the early periods. The absence of cell phones made it difficult for people to communicate. The use of payphones and landlines were inconvenient since one could not get the message recipient, and they were mostly available in public places. Internet and televisions' absence made it difficult to know what was happening in other regions; thus, limiting people to know only what is happening within their surroundings (Sutton, 2013). The absence of technological advancement inhibited communication and information exchange. How did people define and present themselves in society before each technological advancement? During the pre-technological advancement era, people presented themselves based on their cultural expectations and not external influences. For example, communication through the landlines and payphones were for specific purposes of informing the recipient of an issue of concern. The absence of the internet made people rely on their efforts to deliver information through horses believed to be faster during these early centuries. People were genuine with one another, and it was easy to authenticate information obtained from one person to another. The habit cushioned communities from misinformation, fake news, and propaganda that coupled the 4 internet era (Leetaru, 2019). The absence of televisions forced early societies to value their cultural activities and use their time in physical activities, such as football. What was the state of social equity prior to each technological advancement? During the early centuries, people relied on traditional means of livelihood to enhance social bonds and keep societies united. Social equity entails justice and fairness of social policy in addressing the concerns of people. Before technological advancement, societies were communal; thus, people were concerned with each member's welfare and well-being. Therefore, social institutions, such as family, religion, and education, were instituted to ensure order and stability. The authorities were also responsive and responded to the people's call to serve justice and fairness to appropriate persons and groups. 5 References Leetaru, K. (2019).
