Define leadership and management

Most of the time people interchangeably use the words leadership and management,
taking them to be having the same meaning. However, the two terms have very different
meaning if we keenly examine them. Leadership involves influencing people, empowering
and making them follow you and join you in making your vision a reality. Leadership is not
determined by the seniority of an individual in an organization or society, neither does it
depend on one's title nor their personal attributes (Jones & Pound, 2008). A leader is one who
directs others by first showing them how the things are done i.e. they don’t just command but
act since they know what they want to achieve and how to achieve it.

Management on the other hand involves the use of people to achieve organizational
goals mainly through its four primary functions i.e. planning, organizing, controlling and
directing. It is closely related to the administration of the organization and unlike leadership,
it has more to do with the position of an individual in the organization. Its motivation is
mainly from organizational goal and not individual goals i.e. the organizational structure
determines the objectives to be achieved and how they are to be achieved (Jones & Pound,
2008).
