you will evaluate Ventilatory Responses during a Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET: http://www.cardiology.org/recentpapers/HFcpdf/Form... )

Use the exported data from the CPET demonstration in class and create a spreadsheet file with charts and tables to summarize the data. --> (I've created and attached the spreadsheets file with the charts, but the charts and tables need adjustment depending on the data)

The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize with common cardiovascular and ventilatory responses determined during Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing.

charts should include...

1. Functional Capacity Charts

  • VO2 (ml/kg/min) vs time chart
  • heart rate (bpm) vs VO2 (ml/kg/min) chart

From the Chart(s) above identify the functional capacity on the chart?

2. Create the charts below and identify the ventilatory thresholds (VT1 & VT2)

  • VT (VAT) using the ventilatory equivalents method = VE/VO2 & VE/VCO2 vs time
  • VT (VAT) using the V-slope method = VCO2 (ml/min) vs VO2 (ml/min)

To record and summarize the data from the CPET...

  • Submit a data spreadsheet (Google sheet or Excel Sheet) with charts and tables.
  • Submit a document or sheet that summarizes the different methods for determining an exercise intensity prescription (e.g., heart rate range) during exercise. Use the class demo data. Include comments regarding the strength and weaknesses of each method below.
    • Use PMHR AS IF the max heart rate is NOT known and ALSO use the actual HRmax determined during the GXT in lab
    • Then determine target HR target ranges at 45-85% using each of the following; %HRmax, %HRR and (%VO2R attached PDF.), and %VO2Max methods.
    • Now determine the target HR ranges while using VT1 and VT2 (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC44912...) as lower and upper ranges
    • Create a table and compare the intensity target ranges. List each of the ranges in order of best to worst and justify your ratings.

PREVENTIVE CARDIOLOGY SUMMER 2003 EDITORIAL New Insights on the Threshold Intensity for Improving Cardiorespiratory Fitness Barry A. Swain, PhD2 revious studies in persons with and without docuP mented coronary artery disease (CAD) have identified a low aerobic capacity or maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) as an independent risk factor for allcause and cardiovascular mortality.1–5 An exercise capacity of <5 metabolic equivalents (METs; 1 MET=3.5 mL/min/kg) generally indicates a higher mortality group (primarily due to cardiovascular disease), whereas an exercise capacity ≥10 METs identifies a cohort with an excellent long-term prognosis, regardless of the underlying extent of CAD or its ischemic consequences.6 Using the conventional Bruce treadmill protocol7 (Figure 1), a capacity <5 METs corresponds to failure to complete stage I (1.7 mph, 10% grade), while ≥10 METs corresponds to completion of stage III (3.4 mph, 14% grade) or greater. Recent studies in healthy adults and patients with CAD suggest that each 1-MET increase in exercise capacity confers an 8%–12% reduction in mortality.3,8,9 As a result, there has been a heightened interest in previous investigations that have attempted to identify a threshold or minimum exercise intensity for eliciting improvement in VO2max. This editorial summarizes new information and insights regarding the effectiveness of light-to-moderate exercise intensities for enhancing cardiorespiratory fitness, with specific reference to the threshold intensity for training among subjects with and without CAD with varied baseline VO2max values. In addition, the concept of oxygen consumption reserve (VO2R) for establishing training intensities, and the value of brisk walking are discussed.
