War has a way of transforming lives and countries, and the United States was not
spared from this. America actually played a big role in World War I, but it is not as welltalked about, as it has been overshadowed by other instances and inhumanities surrounding
the war. Due to Germany’s violation of its pledge, President Woodrow Wilson requested a
declaration of war against the said country before a joint session of Congress (United States,
Dept. of State, Office of the Historian, Foreign Service Institute). A lot of historians say that
the United States’ Army were too late. However, it must be said that if it were not for the
intervention of the U.S. Army in France in 1918, Germany would have won the war. The
British and the French were not doing well in 1918 (Wawro).
President Wilson originally wanted to stay neutral during the war as America was
home to people coming from the different warring countries. However, what was thought of
as a “short” war began to progress. The war started on July 28, 1914 and ended on November
11, 1918. It was in 1917 that he announced a change in position saying, “the world must be
made safe for democracy” (National WWI Museum and Memorial). On January 8, 1918,
