A database refers to a collection of information that is systematized to enable easy
accessing, updating and managing of data. Databases enable organizations to store, organize and
control a large quantity of information using one software application. By taking advantage of
the databases, businesses are in a position to improve their efficiency and reduce the operation
costs (Balter, 2013). This study, therefore, explores Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server,
Oracle, and IBM DB2 databases. The paper examines the history, functioning, advantages and
disadvantages of the mentioned databases.
History and development timeline
Microsoft Access
Microsoft Access has been in existence for approximately 23 years. The first version was
referred to as Microsoft Access 1.0 which was released in November 1992. 1.1 version in 1993
shortly replaced this version. The 1.1 version delivered the needed compatibility with other
Microsoft Office products. Due to performance issues, version 2.0 was released the same year to
resolve the issues encountered with the earlier version (Balter, 2013).
In 1995, there was a fourth release named Microsoft Access 95. This move was an
important one as the version allowed Access to leverage and integrate many essential features
used among other office applications like Formant painter and Spellchecking. Microsoft Access
97 was released in 1997 to solve the problems of Microsoft Access 95 like slowness of the JET
database. This version was followed by Microsoft Access 2000 and 2002. The Microsoft Access
2003 had some enhancement features like the improvement in the data export and import. The
2007 Access came with additions like the new file format (ACCDB). The need for better
integration of access with Microsoft SharePoint Server led to the release of Microsoft Access

2010 (Balter, 2013). The latest versions of access are Microsoft Access 2013 and 2016 which
works on Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.
