An arch in the shape of a parabola is 20 feet wide at it's base and 15 feet tall at it's maximum height.

Let be the height, in feet, of the arch feet from the left-hand side.

find a formula for h(x)

find a relevant domain and range for h(x)

y =15-kx2

The base is 20 feet wide. Hence (20,0) is on the curve

0=15 –k(202) or k =15/400 =3/80

Hence the equation of the parabola is y =15-3/80* x2

Domain is (-infinity, infinity)

Range is (-infinity, 15)

Maximum for y is 15 when x=0

Minimum for y is -infinity
