Nursing homes provide patients and the elderly population with an opportunity to have a
peaceful and healthy life outside a hospital. Over the past decade, the number of adults in nursing
homes has increased, putting a strain on the available nursing home facilities. Research shows that
approximately 5% of U.S. adults aged 65 years and older reside in nursing homes (Cameron et al.,
2018). The majority of the elderly population living in nursing homes require assistance for most
of their daily activities, including eating, walking, moving out of bed, and others. A significant
number of residents in nursing homes experience life-threatening events, some of which require
hospitalization. Some causes of adverse events in nursing homes include medication errors,
infections, falls, and others. Most of the health hazards at nursing homes are preventable, making
it necessary to put measures to mitigate them and their effects.
Accidental falls are preventable, yet they remain the most common problem facing
residents in nursing homes. It is estimated that the rate of falls in nursing homes is 2.6 per person
in any given year. Research shows that 50% to 70% of nursing facility residents fall each year,
which puts them at higher risk of suffering from adverse health outcomes (Cooper, 2017).
Although most of the falls are injury-free and benign, about 10-25% of the falls result in
hospitalization and fractures (Cooper, 2017). Additionally, approximately 1800 individuals living
in nursing facilities die from falls in any given year. People living in nursing homes are more
