In this section, you may also include any relevant information on how you have overcome barriers to access higher education, evidence of how you have come to understand the barriers faced by others, evidence of your academic service to advance equitable access to higher education for women, racial minorities, and individuals from other groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education, evidence of your research focusing on underserved populations or related issues of inequality, or evidence of your leadership among such groups. The Personal History Statement is required for all applicants. Please note that the Personal History Statement should not duplicate the Statement of Purpose. Writing the Personal Statement Helpful tips and advice for drafting a compelling personal statement when applying for graduate admission What does this statement need to accomplish? The personal statement should give concrete evidence of your promise as a member of the academic community, giving the committee an image of you as a person. This is also where you represent your potential to bring to your academic career a critical perspective rooted in a non-traditional educational background, or your understanding of the experiences of groups historically under-represented in higher education and your commitment to increase participation by a diverse population in higher education. What kinds of content belongs here? Anything that can give reviewers a sense of you as a person belongs here; you can repeat information about your experiences in your research statement, but any experiences that show your promise, initiative, and ability to persevere despite obstacles belongs here. This is also a good place to display your communication skills and discuss your ability to maximize effective collaboration with a diverse cross-section of the academic community. If you have faced any obstacles or barriers in your education, sharing those experiences serves both for the selection process, and for your nomination for fellowships. If one part of your academic record is not ideal, due to challenges you faced in that particular area, this is where you can explain that, and direct reviewers’ attention to the evidence of your promise for higher education. The basic message: your academic achievement despite challenges Surname 2 It is especially helpful for admissions committees considering nominating you for fellowships for diversity if you discuss any or all of the following: • • • • • Demonstrated significant academic achievement by overcoming barriers such as economic, social, or educational disadvantage; Potential to contribute to higher education through understanding the barriers facing women, domestic minorities, students with disabilities, and other members of groups underrepresented in higher education careers, as evidenced by life experiences and educational background. For example,, o attendance at a minority serving institution; o ability to articulate the barriers facing women and minorities in science and engineering fields; o participation in higher education pipeline programs such as, UC Leads, or McNair Scholars; Academic service advancing equitable access to higher education for women and racial minorities in fields where they are underrepresented; Leadership experience among students from groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education; Research interests focusing on underserved populations and understanding issues of racial or gender inequalities. For example, o o o research that addresses issues such as race, gender, diversity, and inclusion; research that addresses health disparities, educational access and achievement, political engagement, economic justice, social mobility, civil and human rights, and other questions of interest to historically underrepresented groups; artistic expression and cultural production that reflects culturally diverse communities or voices not well represented in the arts and humanities. Personal background and experiences Quite evidently, I have faced various stumbling blocks and overcame them successfully to pursue a undergraduate degree in statistics. The course is both challenging and thrilling in equal measure. The fun lies in developing the ability to Surname 3 come into difficult moments while taking different subjects offered and get to succeed in them. However, I had not wished to take up the course from the beginning. In my earlier life in the China I developed the wish to delve into other fields that seemed interesting to me. These were such as marketing, hotel management, and economics. The fact was most often dictated by the fact that at that time, I did not have enough information regarding other professional courses and I had the view that the ones I knew were the best that I could venture in and have great satisfaction in the end. Various events would take place over the course of my schooling, which would have an effect on where I ended up. I noticed that the hotel management subject I was taking greatly pulled down by overall grade and therefore affected my GPA which stood at 2.8. I, therefore, realized that the course would not be appropriate for me as I had lesser chances of doing well in it, given my previous performance in it. In the sophomore years, I took a subject in statistics where I was exposed to calculation and statistics methods, sample collection, survey and data analysis. I was readily interested in the field as I found the classes quite interesting. I, therefore, decided to specialize in statistics and moved over from hotel management during the second semester of my sophomore year. I did three statistics courses; Computer Math Data Science, Probability & Statistics I and Probability and Comp Math Data Science, where I attained an average GPA score of 3.83. The good performance has given me great confidence that that statistics is the course for me. I, therefore, invested fully in it through gathering enough information Surname 4 in the subject and engaged with my classmates and professors in a bid to identify different problems and come up with ways of handling them effectively. The information I have gathered has given me great desire to venture into two majors which include statistics and finance. I, therefore, look forward to taking these courses in my post-graduate studies. I have also had to apply the personal skills that I bear. These include good at communicating with people, good at team management and strong organizational and leadership skills, strong practical ability and bold in innovation and new attempts. The skills have enabled me to interact with people and get to understand the various problems that minority racial groups and women have had to face as they seek equitable access to higher education. I have also had to use the skills that I have gathered from different positions that I have held such as the volunteer of the overseas Chinese students-organization WE54 and the vice president of the Student Union and minister of the Public Relations Department of SCP (Summer China Program) Beijing Campus to influence people to gain access to education through motivating them. The effect of such a practice is that I have seen a general increase in the number of people who once seemed a minority in the University increase quite considerably.
