From my understanding and according to eatingwell.com, the Keto diet was originated in 1920 as a diet to treat epilepsy. Today, this diet has become very popular, and although it has been around for quite some time, long term studies have not shown many benefits. So if given a choice between Keto and a vegan diet, I would probably choose a vegan diet. Animal products in large quantities are proven to be unhealthy, and especially over long periods of time. A long-term observational study in over 130,000 adults linked animal-based low carb diets to higher rates of death from heart disease, cancer, and all causes. On the other hand, vegetable-based low carb diets were associated with a lower rate of death from heart disease and all causes . Healthline.com shows many studies that compare long term effects of keto diet vs. a vegan diet and to me the results are astounding.
A tasty lettuce wrapped cheeseburger option may sound a lot better than lentil soup, but which is going to better for your health in the long run? A cheeseburger a day or a variety of different vegetables? Not only should we consider our own health, but what about the planets health? Eating a vegan diet could be the “single biggest way” to reduce your environmental impact on earth, a new study suggests. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce an individual's carbon footprint from food by up to 73 percent. If everyone stopped eating these foods, they found that global farmland use could be reduced by 75 per cent, an area equivalent to the size of the US, China, Australia and the EU combined. I am not only concerned with my health, of course, but the health of our planet. The health of the planet should be at the forefront of everyone's mind. We could all be healthy as an ox, but if our planet decides to die out, we are healthy for no real reason at all. Keto may change you for a while, keep you healthy for a while, but the evidence showing the impact of a Vegan lifestyle for and individual and beyond - Vegan is the way to go.
