1. Where Health Ethics Come From
Human Right
Human rights and medical ethics are two separate mechanisms that work in collaboration
with each other (Peel, 2005). While human rights work at the sociopolitical level, medical ethics
is more concerned with the doctor-patient relationship. Human rights demand that both the state
and healthcare providers adhere to certain minimum standards. Medical ethics on the other hand
focus on individual healthcare professionals who have to adhere to parallel standards (Peel,
2005). Therefore, the two entities are complementary, and relying on both maximizes the safety
of patients.
