The United States of America has a documented history of differences in sentences
based on the racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. African Americans are more likely to be
sentenced harshly than white Americans for the same crime. A case in point is Brock Turner a
white American youth who raped a woman but seemed to draw sympathy from the bench and
was acquitted of the rape charges even after evidence showing that he was guilty because he took
photos of the assault. On the other hand, Cory Batey, an African American youth also raped an
unconscious woman and was sentenced to 25 years in jail (King, 2016). It essentially shows that
whereas the two youths committed similar crime one walked free while the other was jailed
because of their socioeconomic backgrounds.
