1. Explain briefly the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) refer to the federal law passed
by the US congress in 1996 that advocates for the protection of patient health information
through the creation of national standards. HIPAA prohibits the disclosure or release of patient
information without their knowledge or consent.Again,HIPAA regulations have generally
contributed to reduction in healthcare abuse and fraud since there is strict adherence to
nationwide standards for the handling of electronic medical records.
2. Notable Adopted Standards
Notable adopted standards refer to those standards which are not part of the national
standards but are incorporated by members of a particular profession or industry. For instance, in
the United States, most health organizations adhere to the joint commission accreditation (JCA)
standards although the federal and state jurisdictions do not impose the standard.
3. Institute of Medicine (IOM)
The Institute Of Medicine (IOM),is a nonprofit private organization established in 1972
whose main function was training of all categories of health professionals. It is a credible and
respectable organization that provides unbiased and professional advice to policy makers and
other stakeholders in the healthcare field.

4. Explain the four most notable main functions of the HER
The acronym HER stands for the Human Epidermal growth factor receptor HER performs
several functions. The main functions of the Human Epidermal Growth Factor (HER) include:


Stimulating the development of different types of cells including both epithelial and
fibroblasts



Leads to the activation of the human epidermal growth receptor which is responsible for
intracellular signals



HER also has several skin benefits including reduction of wrinkles and hydration



HER also contributes in the synthesis of fibrous proteins like elastin and collagen

5. Explain the HITECH Act
The health information technology for economic and clinical act, popularly known as the
HITECH act, was enacted for the purposes of the implementation of electronic health records
through embracing technology by all healthcare institutions in the United States. HITECH act in
essence enforces the HIPAA privacy rules even when healthcare institutions introduce new
technology. One benefit of the HITECH act is that is that patients must be able to access their
protected electronic medical records.
6. Define the Meaningful Use
The meaningful use refers to the usage of the technology for health records in a”
meaningful way” that improves the delivery of quality health care to the patients. For instance
the introduction of electronic health records eases the electronic exchange of relevant
information and this improves the quality of car3e in the health institutions.
