determine the value of p such that x-4 is a factor of x^4 + 2x^3 - 21x^2 + px + 40.

Substitute x = 4 and equate to zero to find p

4^4 + 2 * 4^3 - 21 * 4^2 + 4p + 40 =0

256 + 128 - 336 + 40 + 4p =0

4p = -88

p = -22
