this happens basically because when an ecosystem is more biodiverse,
there is a lot of redundancy (i.e. "repeated elements", lots of species
that may fulfill very similar functions). Thus, the disturbances that
affect one or some of the elements of the system will be more likely to
be "absorbed" by the rest of the system
